AbstractThe "Speech Assistant" was devised with the intention to provide assistance to co-workers at Public Institution RTV Slovenija who appear in radio, television and multimedia shows. This e-learning module makes it possible for speakers, reporters, presenters and other interested co-workers to check the proper pronunciation and intonation of the most important words and phrases, clauses, sentences etc. that are characteristic of the particular language. The amount of processed entries is updated regularly and in accordance with the rules of correct spoken language. For better transparency and easier usage the entries are organised in four chapters: • phrases • terms • Geographical terms • Persons Each entry includes phonetic treatment (pronunciation) and the explanation of its meaning as well as the description of particularities of its pronunciation in a foreign language. Speech Assistant is available to users on the web site of the RTV Slovenija Educational Centre, on personal computers and on work stations in studios, so that presenters can check the correct pronunciation any time, also just before the show goes on air. The philosophy of the concept allows the development of this E-module also for educational needs on all levels on which pupils, students and teachers are faced with phonetic particularities or dilemmas about correct pronunciation. This E-module currently allows only listening to the pronunciation, but it can be upgraded to an interactive module – with a function similar to phonetic laboratory, where the module will check the user's pronunciation and provide a feed-back according to the required standards. Through repetition, the users will be able to quickly learn proper pronunciation and intonation patterns. |
