Abstract
Podcasts (the word is derived from 'iPod' and 'broadcasting') are audio and video broadcasts. In the classroom, they can be used to support traditional learning since they involve digital listening and reading. Their added value is in the fact that they can be easily created either by teachers or by students using any type of a recording device (audio or video). As such they introduce the element of authentic learning into the classroom. By creating podcasts, students take responsibility for their learning and become active and involved co-creators of the learning process. In addition, students use the same digital tools that they use in their free time. Podcasts can be created either completely independently or with the teacher stepping into a guiding role.
The workshop aims to raise awareness of the significance of podcasts in the educational process, both for students and teachers. The participants will experience the roles of active listeners and active creators. Using the open-source software Audacity, the group will record podcasts and save them in the mp3 format. The recorded podcasts will then be exchanged via e-mail, presented in e-classrooms or uploaded to websites that allow users to upload and share podcasts with other users, for example Huffduffer. The workshop will attempt to transcend the usual standard of (non-)cooperation.
