Workshop Abstract
Computer science does not have (much) to do with computers. A computer science class is (or should be) an exercise in thinking, similarly to mathematics being an exercise in formal expression of abstract thinking and logical deduction. As is the case with mathematics, computer science can be taught as a stand-alone subject or as part of other subjects, from mathematics to physical education. It is not of vital importance that the students know that they are being trained in computer science.
The workshop will show how to teach computer science outside the constraints of the classroom. Teachers will assume the roles of students and collaborate in some of the activities listed here: vidra.fri.uni-lj.si.
If the weather permits, we will visit the Treasure Island and try our hand at Parallel Sorting. If the weather is not favourable, we will construct a computer using candies (Learning Computer). Since this activity requires the children to eat the ‘wrong’ candies, we will shed the calories by practicing binary counting (How High Can a Millipede Count?).
Keywords: computer science, contemporary teaching, vidra.fri.uni-lj.si.
Target group: primary school teachers.
