Abstract
Quality telecommunication connections have become a prerequisite for the success of educational and research activities. Because of ever increasing traffic and the needs of new and demanding communication services, it has become necessary to upgrade the national backbone network as well as connections to individual organizations to optical fiber links. In this article, we present an overview of technologies which enable greater than 10 Gb connections over optical fiber. Also included is a description of the solution which, in spite of prices of fiber lease which are several times higher than in other countries, enabled the use of these technologies in the ARNES backbone. The architecture and topology of the new network has been provided together with details of the capacity of the individual connections and new possibilities which are now available in Slovenia, and through the connection to the European research and education network GEANT2 also throughout the Europe and wider. Special emphasis has been given to gigabit point to point connections for individual more demanding projects. In closing, a plan for future development of ARNES optical backbone is given, together with a short look at the development of WDM technology and Ethernet, which will enable capacities of 40 and 100 Gb.
