GÉANT2 in ARNES2 – e-infrastruktura raziskovalnega in izobraževalnega omrežja v Evropi in Sloveniji

GÉANT2 and ARNES2 – The e-Infrastrucutre of the Research and Education Network in Europe and Slovenia

Povzetek
Akademska in raziskovalna mreža Slovenije – Arnes povezuje slovenske izobraževalne in raziskovalne organizacije v enotno informacijsko omrežje. Omrežje ARNES je del vseevropskega omrežja GÉANT2, ki združuje preko 30 milijonov uporabnikov s področja izobraževanja in raziskovanja. Podobna namenska omrežja (NREN – National Research and Education Network) obstajajo tudi drugod po svetu – npr. Internet2 v ZDA – in v tesnem partnerstvu oblikujejo globalno e-infrastrukturo, namenjeno uporabnikom v raziskovalni in izobraževalni sferi.

Cilj sodelovanja evropskih in svetovnih NREN-ov je združevanje znanja pri razvoju novih tehnologij, uvajanju enotnih varnostnih in kakovostnih standardov ter skupnih storitev, namenjenih specifičnim potrebam raziskovanja in izobraževanja. V Evropi želimo s tem zagotoviti enake možnosti za sodelovanje vseh držav in vključiti v proces vse nivoje izobraževanja. Tudi v Slovenijo prinaša prenovljena hrbtenica omrežja ARNES2 hibridno funkcionalnost omrežja GÉANT2, namenjeno povezovanju raziskovalne infrastrukture najzahtevnejših uporabnikov, Arnes pa podobno kot sorodni NREN-i skrbi za enotno upravljanje in varovanje omrežja ter podporo njegovim storitvam. Kot del skupnosti Arnes skrbi tudi za prenos znanja in osveščanje uporabnikov, pomemben napor pa posveča razvoju tehnične podpore federacijam uporabnikov pri uporabi skupnih storitev, kakršna je Eduroam.

Abstract
The Academic and Research Network of Slovenia – Arnes links Slovenian educational and research organizations into unified information network. The Arnes network is a part of the European GEANT2 network, which includes over 30 million users from the educational and research field. Networks with a similar purpose (NREN - National Research and Education Network) exist all over the world (e.g. Internet2 in the USA) and are all together forming a global e-Infrastructure, designed for the users in the educational and research sphere.

The goal of this cooperation of European and world NREN's is the pool of knowledge when developing new technologies, introducing unified security and quality standards and common services, all of which are designed to be used for the specific purposes and needs of education and research. In Europe want to assure the same possibilities of cooperation to all countries. We would also like to include all levels of education in this process. The modernized backbone of the ARNES2 network brings the hybrid functionality of the GEANT2 network to Slovenia, which combines the research infrastructure of the most demanding users; ARNES like all related NRENs takes care for the unified direction and protection of the network and support services. As a part of the community, ARNES facilitates the transfer of the knowledge, also informs its users and puts a great deal of effort into developing technical support for federations of users, which use its joint services as it is for example Eduroam.
