Povzetek
Štirko vse bolj utruja nezadržna rast svetovnega spleta. Število IP-naprav nenehno raste, prostih IPv4-naslovov bo kmalu zmanjkalo. Med razmišljanjem o mehanizmih, ki Štirki kljub pomanjkanju IPv4-naslovov še omogočajo povezovanje novih naprav, jo zmoti nadebudna najstnica z imenom Šestka. Med zabavnim pogovorom se Štirka zave, da so Šestkine zamisli dobre in da bodo omogočile nadaljnji razvoj spleta.
V pogovoru med Štirko in Šestko bomo spoznali IPv4- in IPv6-naslove, bistvene razlike med obema protokoloma, komunikacijo IP-naprav v lokalnih omrežjih ethernet, slabosti translacijskih mehanizmov NAT v IPv4-omrežjih, pomembnost ICMP-sporočil … Klepet bo tekel tudi o varnosti in vplivih sprememb v IP-protokolu na spletne storitve – skratka, premleli bomo mnogo tehničnih podrobnosti IP-tehnologije, o katerih bosta Štirka in Šestka na šaljiv način izmenjali mnenja. Štirka in Šestka bosta poklepetali tudi o nujnosti in nekaterih najverjetnejših scenarijih prehoda z IPv4- na povsem IPv6-omrežja.
Pa ne skrbite, zgodba se srečno konča.
Abstract
IP Four is becoming increasingly tired in the face of the unstoppable growth of the Internet. The number of IP devices is continuously increasing, while free IPv4 addresses are running out. Considering mechanisms to allow new devices to be connected even though IPv4 address space is nearly full, Four runs into a promising teenager – Six. In an entertaining conversation, Four recognises that Six has some good ideas that will enable future development of the Internet.
Four and Six discuss many technical issues about IP technology. They talk about IP addresses, IP communication within Ethernet LANs, NAT, and the importance of ICMP ...etc. The two also discuss security and how changes in IP protocol design can influence Internet services; many technical details of the two protocols are compared in an informal and somewhat amusing manner. Four and Six also chat about the urgency of the transition to IPv6-only networks.
