Abstract
What do the various participants of the SIRIKT conference – universities, schools, libraries, researchers, museum, etc. have in common? They are all essentially connected with knowledge, creating, accumulating or transferring it to the others, they also share a wish to cooperate… and the ARNES network.
Arnes was founded on the European model of national research and education networks (NREN), whose purpose is exactly to bring closer all those that deal with knowledge. Special high-performance networks, such as G É ANT2, are built for this community by NREN's. Joined at the European level in the organisation TERENA, we have developed a common infrastructure and set of services designed specifically for this sphere. With unified standards for quality, safety and support these facilitate mutual cooperation, which has no problems with crossing boundaries.
Networks are designed on the technology of optical fibres which supports the complex services offered and quality of service to the end user, if they are adequately connected to the network. Arnes is cooperating with other networks in establishing an internationally unified infrastructure programme (middleware) for authentication and authorisation (AAI) – the initial benefits of these efforts can be seen in the rapidly growing Eduroam network.
A multimedia centre with a central server and support for establishing quality national and international videoconferences with more participants enables remote, live participation, and additionally the transmission and archiving of events.
SI-CERT, together with an international network of similar centres, contributes substantially to the security of the network and provides advice and information about potential problems and abuse – and Arnes cooperates in European projects for a safer Internet. Arnes will offer hosting onits servers to an increasing number of complex and autonomous pieces of web content, and in the year 2007, Arnes users will have at their disposal free server certificates.
The majority of the listed themes or services will be debated in greater detail at the conference in specific presentations and we also hope to have feedback from the users, which will show us the direction of the future development of the network.
